About Johari

Johari is a philanthropic venture project founded by Seed of Hope Centres, the Sumerian Foundation and the Kate MacKaskill Foundation.

Johari designs, produces and markets contemporary African gowns, informal evening wear and jewellery. Our products use some of the finest African fabrics we can source, and reflect a design ethos that captures the best of African and European culture.

Johari is a name that means 'jewel' or 'something precious' in Swahili. This name was chosen as it reflects so much of our purpose. The girls we work with at Seed of Hope Centres are precious, the opportunities provided by Seed of Hope Centres are precious, and as a result - the products of Johari are precious too.

Our slogan 'Hidden Treasure' also reflects this. The vulnerable girls who graduate from Seed of Hope Centres and bring their wonderful skills, are truly Johari's hidden treasure.

Johari exists for three fundamental purposes:

  • To give opportunities to Seed of Hope graduates who are trying to establish themselves in business.
  • To eventually be profit-making to the extent that Seed of Hope Centres, new and existing, will be fully funded through Johari profits.
  • To be a profitable African design house that produces the highest quality of couture and hand-made jewellery.
